Garage Door Repair in Phoenix, AZ: What Summer Heat Breaks First

It worked fine in March. By July the door is slow, loud, or stuck, and you are not sure whether to blame the door or the opener.

If the door will not open, pull the red release cord with the door closed and try to lift it by hand. A door that lifts easily but will not move on the opener is an opener or sensor problem. A door that feels like it weighs a hundred pounds is a spring problem, and that is the moment to stop and call.

Why July is the hard month

A closed garage in Phoenix gets much hotter than the air outside, and almost everything that moves in your door is working in that heat. Grease thins and runs out of rollers and hinges. Plastic parts inside the opener get brittle. Rubber weatherstripping on the bottom of the door bakes hard. The remote battery in the car dashboard gives up first, which is why so many July calls start with a remote that suddenly has no range.

Heat also changes how often you notice problems. In summer the door is the cool-down entrance for the whole house, so it cycles more. Springs are rated in cycles, and a standard pair is built for roughly 10,000 of them. At four trips a day that is about seven years. If your springs are around that age, a hot month is when they pick their moment.

What the opener is telling you

Most openers we see on Phoenix calls are chain or belt units a decade old. When the drive gear strips, you hear the motor spin while the trolley stays put. A gear and sprocket kit is a $289 repair and often the right call on a good opener. If the motor itself is tired or the unit is past its useful life, a belt drive replacement runs $689 installed. We tell you which one makes sense before we pick up a tool, and we show you the worn part.

What it costs, in order of how often we see it

These are the prices we publish on the site, so you can check them before you call. The service call is $35 and it is credited to the repair if you go ahead. A torsion spring pair, installed, is $180 to $290 depending on the door weight. An off-track door starts around $200. A drive gear kit is $289. A belt drive opener installed is $689. If the door itself is the problem and repair no longer makes sense, a new door starts at $1,800 and an insulated door is $2,650.

One note on springs: they work as a pair on a double door, and we replace both. If one is broken, the other has the same miles on it and is usually days or weeks behind.

What a Phoenix visit looks like

Your call is answered by a person at any hour, including nights and weekends. Technicians are dispatched Monday to Friday 7am to 8pm and Sunday 8am to 6pm, so a late-night call gets you a real conversation and a slot first thing, not a voicemail. A customer described the late-night part this way:

“I text Nate pretty late on Tuesday night, he was here early Wednesday to take a look and make recommendations.”

Garage door repair in Phoenix: real questions, straight answers

Why does my garage door stop working more in summer?

Heat thins grease, hardens rubber and makes plastic opener parts brittle, and the door cycles more because it is the cool entrance to the house. A spring near the end of its roughly 10,000-cycle life tends to fail on a hot day.

My remote stopped working but the wall button works. Is the opener broken?

Usually not. A weak or heat-baked remote battery is the most common cause. Replace the battery first. If a new battery does not help, the receiver or the remote itself is the next check.

The door goes down then comes back up. Is that a spring?

No. That is the opener reversing for safety. Check that both sensor lights are solid, wipe the lenses and look for an obstruction in the track. A broken spring shows up as a door that will not lift, not one that reverses.

Can I fix a broken spring myself?

We recommend you do not. The spring holds enough tension to hurt someone badly. Pull the release cord only if the door is fully closed, keep it shut, and call.

How much is a garage door repair in Phoenix?

The service call is $35 and is credited to the repair. A torsion spring pair is $180 to $290 installed, an off-track repair starts around $200, and a drive gear kit is $289.
