Start with the licence

Two minutes on the registrar website settles most of it

Arizona contractors are listed publicly by the Registrar of Contractors. You can search by licence number or by business name and see the status, the licence classification and whether there are complaints on file. Ours is ROC338265.

Arizona also has a handyman exemption: small jobs under a dollar threshold can legally be done without a contractor licence, provided the person does not advertise as a licensed contractor. That exemption is legitimate and plenty of honest people work under it. What matters is that you know which one you are hiring, because an unlicensed job sits outside the registrar complaint process entirely.

If a company gives you a number, check it. If a company will not give you a number, that is the answer.

What bonded and insured actually pay for

The two words get said together and they cover completely different things.

  1. The bond protects against the work. It is a limited fund a customer can claim against through the registrar if a licensed contractor does not perform. It is not large and it is not insurance.
  2. Liability insurance protects against the damage. If a technician puts a ladder through your drywall or drops a door on a car, this is what pays. Ask for the certificate if the job is large.
  3. Workers compensation protects you from the crew. If someone is hurt in your garage and is not covered, that can land on the homeowner. This is the one most people never ask about.

None of this needs to be adversarial. A legitimate shop answers all three questions in about thirty seconds.

Four pressure tactics worth refusing on the spot

These turn up around the Sun City Grand and Asante neighbourhoods more than anywhere else we work. None of them are normal.

  • A price that is only good today. Opener parts do not have expiring prices. Urgency on a repair quote exists to stop you getting a second opinion.
  • A safety claim with no demonstration. If a technician says the door is unsafe, he should be able to show you the specific part and explain the failure. "It could come down on someone" with nothing pointed at is not a diagnosis.
  • Replacement quoted before any testing. A capacitor, a gear kit and a pair of misaligned sensors are three of the most common opener faults and all three are repairs. Nobody can skip straight to a new unit honestly.
  • No written quote before work begins. Not an estimate shouted from a ladder. A written figure you agree to first.

You are allowed to say you want to think about it, and you are allowed to ask the person to leave. Any company worth hiring expects both.

Questions that get honest answers

Ask these four and listen for hesitation rather than for the perfect reply.

  • What is your ROC number, and are the technicians your employees or subcontractors?
  • What specifically is failing, and can you show me?
  • What does the repair cost, and what does a replacement cost, so I can see both?
  • Will the quote and the warranty terms be in writing before you start?

Questions we actually get

What Surprise homeowners ask about trusting a garage door company

How do I check an Arizona garage door contractor licence?

Search the Arizona Registrar of Contractors by licence number or business name. You will see the licence status, its classification and any complaints on file. Ours is ROC338265. If a company will not give you a number to search, treat that as the answer and move on.

What is the difference between bonded and insured?

A bond is a limited fund you can claim against through the registrar if a licensed contractor fails to perform the work. Liability insurance pays for damage the technician causes to your property. Workers compensation covers injury to the crew while they are on your property. They are three separate protections and a legitimate shop can confirm all three quickly.

A technician said my opener is unsafe and must be replaced today. Is that normal?

Not without a demonstration. Ask him to show you the specific failed part and explain what happens next if it is left. Genuine safety faults are visible: a frayed cable, a cracked bracket, sensors that will not hold alignment. A price that expires today is a sales technique, not a safety finding.

Do you charge extra in the active-adult communities?

No. The service call is $35 anywhere in Surprise, credited against the repair, and the quote is the same whoever is standing in the garage. We also put the figure in writing before starting so there is nothing to misremember afterwards.
