Surprise · One spring or both
Where Can I Find Reliable Garage Door Spring Replacement in Surprise?
The spring on the left is in two pieces and the one on the right looks untouched. Replacing just the broken one feels like the sensible, thrifty choice. It is the decision that brings most people back inside a year.
Above All Garage Door Service replaces springs in matched pairs on Surprise doors unless there is a specific reason not to, and will explain which it is before quoting. Torsion replacement runs $180 to $290, the $35 service call is credited to the repair. AZ ROC338265, bonded and insured, 5.0 across 49 Google reviews, working the Valley since 2012.

The arithmetic nobody does at the time
The surviving spring is not a spare. It is the next failure
On a two-spring door, both springs were wound onto the shaft on the same day and they have shared every cycle since. If one has reached the end of its rated life, the other is within a few hundred cycles of the same place. It did not survive because it is stronger. It survived because it went second.
There is a second effect that is less obvious. Once one spring is replaced and the other is left, the new spring is stiffer and the old one is tired, so the lift is no longer even across the shaft. The door climbs slightly faster on one side, and over months that works the top section, the rollers and the cable drums.
The cost difference is where this stops being an opinion. A second spring fitted during the same visit is a part and a few minutes of winding. A second spring fitted three months later is a part, a call-out and another afternoon.
The one case where replacing a single spring is defensible
We will do it, and we will write the reason on the invoice.
- The springs are genuinely different ages. If one was replaced two years ago and the original partner has only just failed, matching the newer one is reasonable.
- The cycle counts are documented. Which is only possible if the previous invoice named the part, which is the whole argument for keeping it.
Outside that, a single replacement is a saving that borrows from next year. If a company is recommending it without asking when the other spring was fitted, they are not making a judgement. They are quoting a lower number.
Four things a reliable spring job leaves you with
Not the door working. That is the minimum. These are what separate a finished job from a temporary one.
- A door that stays where you put it. Lifted by hand to waist height with the opener disconnected, it should hold rather than drift up or sink.
- Matched tension on both sides. The door should rise level, with no corner leading. A leading corner means the drums are not set evenly.
- Opener force reset after the fact. A rebalanced door needs less force than the failing one did. Leaving the old settings is how a drive gear gets stripped a month later.
- Paper you can hand to the next technician. Spring size, cycle rating, date, and both warranty terms.
Why the door being left heavy costs you an opener
This is the connection most people miss, and it is the reason we check balance at the end rather than just at the start.
- The opener is designed to move a counterbalanced door, not to lift its full weight.
- An undersized or mismatched spring leaves part of that weight on the motor every cycle.
- The first thing to fail is the plastic drive gear, then the trolley, then the motor.
- All three get diagnosed as opener faults, because by then the spring looks fine.
If someone replaced your springs and the opener died a few months later, those two events are probably the same event.

Questions we actually get
What Surprise homeowners ask after one spring breaks
If only one spring broke, do I have to replace both?
On a two-spring door we strongly recommend it. Both were fitted the same day and have run the same cycles, so the survivor is close to its own end. Mixing a new stiff spring with an old tired one also lifts the door unevenly, which wears the top section, the rollers and the drums. The second spring during the same visit costs far less than a second call-out.
How much more does replacing both springs cost?
Essentially the price of one more part, because the labour, the trip and the winding are already happening. Torsion replacement runs $180 to $290 depending on the size and cycle rating, and we will give you the pair price and the single price so the comparison is in front of you.
Is there ever a good reason to replace just one?
Yes, when the springs are genuinely different ages. If one was changed two years ago and its original partner has only now failed, matching the newer one makes sense. That depends on knowing when the other was fitted, which is why the part details belong on the invoice.
My opener failed a few months after a spring repair. Are they related?
Very often, yes. An opener is built to move a door that the springs are counterbalancing. If the replacement spring was undersized, or one old spring was left in place, the motor carries part of the door weight every cycle, and the drive gear is usually the first thing to go. Have the balance checked before paying for opener parts.
Ask what the other spring has left
Call (480) 405-0909 and tell us whether one or both springs are on the shaft and whether either has been changed before. That answer decides the quote, and we will give you both numbers.
