The door stuck open is the emergency. The door stuck closed usually is not.
A garage door that will not close leaves your house open to the street overnight. That is the call to make now, not tomorrow, and it is the one we move things around for. A door that will not open with a car behind it is the other one, because you are not going anywhere until it moves.
A door that will not open with nothing behind it, an opener that is noisy, a remote that stopped working, a light that will not come on — those are Monday problems. Paying a premium to have someone drive out at 7pm for a dead remote battery is a bad trade and we will tell you so on the phone.
Before you call: pull the red cord
Nearly every opener in Gilbert has a red handle hanging from the trolley rail. Pulling it disconnects the door from the opener so you can lift it by hand. Do this with the door fully closed if you can. If the door is partly open, prop it or have someone hold it — disengaging a door that is up, with a broken spring behind it, lets the whole weight drop.
If the door lifts by hand smoothly and stays where you put it, your springs are fine and the fault is in the opener. If it slams down or will not budge, the spring has broken and the opener was never the problem. That one test tells us on the phone which van and which parts to send, and it costs you nothing.
What actually fails on a Gilbert opener in July
Heat is the local variable. Garages here run well past 120 degrees in summer, and the parts that give up first are the ones that mind heat: the capacitor, the logic board, and the plastic drive gear that goes soft and strips its teeth. The classic symptom of the stripped gear is the motor running normally while nothing moves, with a grinding sound from the head unit.
The second summer failure is the safety sensors. Sun through an open door, heat expansion in the brackets, a bump from a trash can — the beam misaligns, the door goes down six inches and reverses every time. That is a ten-minute fix and it is worth checking the little LEDs on both sensors before you book anyone at all.
You can always reach a person. The van is a separate question.
The phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week — a real person, not a voicemail box, whatever time the door fails. What changes after hours is not whether you can reach us, it is whether a van can roll: technicians are out Monday through Friday from 7am to 8pm and Sunday from 8am to 6pm, and we are closed Saturday.
So if your door is hanging open at 11pm on a Friday, call anyway. We will talk you through securing it on that call — disengage the opener, pull the door down by hand, lock the manual slide bolt on the track — and book you in for first thing. You are not left working it out alone and starting again in the morning.
Some companies take that 11pm call, tell you nothing useful, and dispatch at 9am regardless with an emergency rate attached. We would rather give you the securing steps on the call for nothing and charge you the ordinary price when the van arrives.
What it costs when we do come out
The service call is $35 and it covers the diagnosis, not a deposit toward a repair you have not agreed to. From there, sensor alignment and limit resets are usually the cheapest outcome, gear and sprocket kits sit in the low hundreds, a logic board is more, and a full opener replacement is the top of the range. Torsion springs, if that turns out to be the real fault, run $180 to $290 for the pair.
All of it is quoted in writing before anything is touched. You can decline the repair after the diagnosis and pay the $35, and people do.

What people ask when the door will not move
My car is locked in the garage in Gilbert, what do I do right now?
Pull the red release handle on the trolley rail to disconnect the opener, then lift the door by hand. If it lifts and stays up, drive out and leave it disengaged until someone looks at the opener. If it will not lift or feels enormously heavy, stop — that is a broken spring, and forcing it is how people get hurt.
Is it safe to leave the garage door open overnight if it will not close?
No, and you do not have to. Disengage the opener with the red cord, pull the door down by hand, and slide the manual lock bolt on the track into place. The door is then physically locked from the inside regardless of what the opener is doing.
Do you charge extra for an emergency call in Gilbert?
Our service call is $35 whether you book it for Tuesday morning or for this evening. We do not run a separate after-hours rate, and the phone call itself costs nothing — you can make it at 2am, because the line is answered around the clock.
The door goes down and comes straight back up. Is that an emergency?
Almost never. That is the safety sensors seeing something, or seeing each other badly. Check that both sensor LEDs are lit and steady, wipe the lenses, and make sure nothing is in the opening. If the LEDs are off or flickering, the beam is misaligned and it is a quick fix.
How fast can you get to Gilbert?
Realistically 30 to 40 minutes to the Val Vista and Greenfield side, up to about 45 toward Higley and Queen Creek Road in afternoon traffic. We give you an honest window on the phone rather than a flat thirty-minute promise we cannot keep.
Door hanging open right now?
Call and we will walk you through securing it on the phone before anything else. If it needs a van tonight and we are inside our hours, we will tell you the honest arrival window.
