Motor running but the door won't move? A dying capacitor, a stripped gear, or a failing motor sound almost the same. Here's how to tell which one broke, and what's safe to check yourself.

A dying capacitor, a stripped drive gear, and a failing motor all start the exact same way. The difference matters, because two of those are simple parts and one means the whole unit is close to done.

First: Pull the Manual Release and Lift the Door by Hand

Before anything else, find the red cord hanging from the opener rail and pull it — this disconnects the door from the opener's trolley. Lift the door by hand.

A Short Hum, Then Silence: Usually the Capacitor

Most chain and belt-drive openers use a small start capacitor to give the motor the initial jolt of power it needs to get moving. When that capacitor weakens, the motor hums for a second or two — trying to start — and then gives up. You'll typically notice:

A weak capacitor is one of the most common reasons an opener "just stops working" with no warning, and it's an inexpensive, quick swap once we've confirmed it's the actual cause rather than guessing.

A Continuous Hum That Won't Quit: Could Be the Motor

Grinding Instead of Humming? That's the Gear Kit

If what you're hearing is closer to a grind than a hum — and especially if the motor sounds like it's running fine, just louder than usual — the likely culprit is the opener's internal drive gear. It's a small nylon or plastic gear by design (quieter than an all-metal gear), and it's a wear part: it strips down gradually, especially on openers past the 10-year mark. Two easy tells if you pop the cover with the power off:

A stripped gear is a well-understood, contained repair — replace the gear kit and the opener runs like new. It's also the failure mode most often mistaken for "the whole opener is dying", when really it's one small, inexpensive part.

Is it safe to leave a humming opener alone for a few days?

For a day or two, yes — it isn't a fire risk sitting there. But stop pressing the button repeatedly. Forcing a stripped gear or a failing motor to keep trying is the fastest way to turn a small gear-kit repair into a full motor-head replacement. Use the manual release and run the door by hand until it's looked at.

Can I test the capacitor myself?

We'd rather you didn't. A start capacitor can hold a charge even after the unit is unplugged, and testing it safely means opening the motor housing with a meter in hand. The manual-release lift test above tells you almost as much without any of that risk.

My opener is about 10 years old. Is this worth repairing?

Usually yes, if it turns out to be the capacitor or the gear kit — both are inexpensive, common parts.
