The distinction that costs people money
Manufacturer cover and installer cover are different things
Fit a new logic board to a LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener and two separate promises now exist over that repair.
The manufacturer warranty covers the part itself against defect. On major opener brands these can run for years on some components and months on others, and it is attached to the part and the original purchase, not to the person who fitted it. It pays for a replacement part. It does not pay anyone to come and fit it.
The installer warranty is the contractor's own promise, and it is the one that covers labour, which is the larger number on most repairs. Terms vary enormously and there is no industry standard.
So when a homeowner says "it is under warranty" and a company says "the part is, the labour is not", both are usually telling the truth. The way out of that is to have both terms written down before the first repair, not after the second failure.
The four lines to get on the invoice
- The failed part, named. Not "opener repair". "Drive gear and sprocket, worn" or "logic board, failed".
- The part fitted, with model or size. This is what proves a new part rather than a salvaged one, and it is what a later technician reads to tell whether the correct item went in.
- Parts and labour, shown separately, with a term against each. One year parts and ninety days labour is a different product from one year on both, and the invoice is the only place that difference exists.
- The date.
If a company will not write those four lines, there is no warranty in any practical sense, because there is nothing to claim and nothing to compare.
What genuinely voids opener warranty cover
Three things, and all three are reasonable rather than loopholes:
- Someone else adjusting the work afterwards. If a second contractor resets the force limits or re-tensions a spring, the first one cannot stand behind the outcome.
- A change to the door after the repair. Adding insulation panels or replacing the door makes it heavier than the opener and springs were set up for. That is a new job, not a warranty failure.
- Running the opener on a door that is out of balance. This is the common one. If the springs are at the end of their life and the opener is dragging the door up, the motor is being used outside its design and the manufacturer will say so. It is also why a serious technician checks balance before fitting anything.
How to actually claim, in order
- Find the original invoice with the part model on it. Without the model number, a manufacturer claim is very difficult.
- Go back to the installer first, even if you think only the part is covered. A contractor who stands behind his work will usually handle the manufacturer side for you, because he has the account and you do not.
- If the installer is gone, contact the manufacturer directly with the model and serial from the opener head and the invoice. Expect them to supply a part and expect to pay labour.
- Get the replacement documented the same way. A warranty repair with no paperwork resets you to having nothing.

Questions we actually get
What Glendale homeowners ask about warranties
Does an opener repair warranty cover labour or just the part?
They are usually two separate promises with two different lengths. The manufacturer warranty covers the part against defect and supplies a replacement, but it does not pay anyone to fit it. The installer warranty is what covers labour. Ask for both terms written separately on the invoice with a start date, because after a second failure that document is the whole conversation.
My opener failed again four months after the repair. What should I do first?
Go back to the company that did the work, even if you suspect only the part is covered. They have the manufacturer account and the record of what was fitted, and a contractor who stands behind the job will usually handle the part claim for you. Bring the original invoice with the part model on it, because without that model number a manufacturer claim becomes very hard.
Can a worn spring void my opener warranty?
Yes, and it is the most common reason cover is refused. An opener that is dragging an unbalanced door is working outside its design, and both manufacturers and installers will point at that. It is also why balance should be checked before any opener work: lifting the door by hand with the release cord pulled takes fifteen seconds and protects the repair you are about to pay for.
Do you warranty spring replacement as well as opener work?
Yes, and we write it the same way: the spring size fitted, the parts term and the labour term separately, with a date. Torsion replacement runs $180 to $290 depending on size and count. The exclusions worth knowing are a later adjustment by someone else and a change to the door weight after fitting, since both change the job the spring was sized for.
Ask for both terms before the work, not after
Call (480) 405-0909 and ask what the parts term is and what the labour term is. You will get two numbers and they will appear on the invoice, which is the only place a warranty actually lives.
