What to watch

Six things a competent technician does before naming a price

You do not need to know anything about openers to follow this. You are watching for whether he gathers information or goes straight to selling.

  1. Pulls the red release cord and lifts the door by hand. This is the single most diagnostic action in the trade. A balanced door rises with one hand and stays at waist height.
  2. Runs the opener and listens. A hum without travel, a groan that stalls, a clean run that reverses at the floor: three different faults that look identical from the doorway.
  3. Reads the model label on the motor head. That decides whether the board is still made, which decides repair or replace.
  4. Checks the photo eyes and follows the wire. On older Glendale garages the stapled wire fails, not the eyes.
  5. Looks at the springs, cables and the bottom brackets. Even on an opener call. Half of what people book as opener faults are balance faults.
  6. Writes down what failed before discussing cost.

Five things that should make you stop the job

  • A price before any of the above. A number produced in the first ninety seconds is a price list, not a diagnosis.
  • "The whole unit needs replacing" with no part named. Ask which part failed. If there is no answer, there was no diagnosis.
  • The job growing while you stand there. Spring, then cables, then drums, then the door. Each addition should come with something he can point at.
  • Refusal to put the failed part in writing. This is the cheapest and most reliable filter you have, and it costs nothing to apply.
  • Pressure framed as safety. Real safety issues get explained and secured. Manufactured ones get used as a closing technique.

What makes someone an expert on Glendale garages specifically

This city asks three things of a technician that a newer suburb does not:

  • Detached garages. The historic townsite is full of them, with their own circuits, no finished interior wall and no network coverage. Diagnosing a brownout as a brownout rather than a dead motor is local knowledge.
  • One-piece tilt-up doors. Still present on 1950s and 60s homes here, and they take completely different hardware from a sectional. A technician who has only seen sectionals will mis-specify the job.
  • Heat-cooked boards. An uninsulated garage ceiling in July is brutal on electronics, and these failures arrive in clusters at the end of summer rather than evenly through the year.

The questions worth asking on the booking call

  1. "What is your ROC number?" Ours is ROC338265 and it is checkable on the Arizona Registrar of Contractors site in a minute.
  2. "Are you bonded and insured?" Both, and they cover different failures.
  3. "What is the service call and what does it include?" Ours is $35 for the trip and a written diagnosis.
  4. "Will you check the door balance even though I am calling about the opener?" The answer should be yes without hesitation.

Four questions, about a minute, and they filter out most of what goes wrong on these jobs.

What we hold ourselves to

Above All Garage Door Service is owner-operated, has worked the Phoenix Valley since 2012, holds Arizona licence ROC338265, and is bonded and insured.

  • Diagnosis before price, every visit, in the order described above.
  • A $35 service call named on the phone.
  • Torsion spring replacement $180 to $290 depending on size and count.
  • The failed part, the part fitted, labour and parts separated, and the warranty terms, written on the invoice.
  • The phone is answered around the clock; technicians are dispatched Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 8:00 pm and Sunday 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Questions we actually get

What Glendale homeowners ask before booking

How can I tell if a garage door technician knows what he is doing?

Watch the first ten minutes. A competent technician pulls the release cord and lifts the door by hand, runs the opener and listens to it, reads the model label off the motor head, and checks the photo eyes and their wiring, all before mentioning money. If a price arrives in the first ninety seconds, you have been quoted from a price list rather than diagnosed.

Why should the technician check my springs if I called about the opener?

Because a tired spring makes the opener strain, and the opener is what people notice. Fitting a new motor to an unbalanced door simply transfers the load to the new motor, which then fails early. The hand-lift test takes fifteen seconds and tells him which problem you actually have. Any technician who will not do it is guessing.

The quote went up a lot once he was in my garage. Is that normal?

It can be legitimate if the fault turns out to be different from what you described, but it should always come with something he can point at: the frayed cable, the stripped gear, the grooved drum. If the job keeps growing without visible evidence, stop and get a second written quote. Nothing about a garage door requires a decision in the next five minutes.

Do you work on one-piece tilt-up garage doors?

Yes. They are still around on the 1950s and 60s homes in the older parts of Glendale, and they take different hardware from a sectional door, including different opener mounting and a different spring arrangement. If a company tells you a tilt-up door cannot be automated or cannot be repaired, that is a limitation of their van rather than of the door.

Ask the four questions, then watch the ten minutes

Call (480) 405-0909 and ask about the licence, the cover, the service call and whether we will check the door balance. Then watch what happens when we arrive, which is the part that actually tells you.
