Garage Door Repair in Buckeye, AZ: What Squealing, Grinding and Banging Mean

The sound your door makes tells you which part is failing.

A squeal usually means dry hinges or rollers. A grinding sound from the motor means a worn opener gear. A loud bang followed by a door that will not lift means a broken spring. Only the last one is an emergency, and a spring replacement is $180-$290.

Squealing or chirping

Metal on metal with a high pitch is almost always a dry hinge, a dry roller stem or a spring that needs a light coat of lubricant. It is the cheapest noise to fix and the one most people ignore for years.

Spray a silicone or lithium lubricant made for garage doors on the hinges, the roller stems and the spring coils. Wipe off the excess. If the squeal comes back within a week, a roller bearing has failed and the roller should be replaced.

Grinding or rattling from the opener

If the sound comes from the motor unit on the ceiling and the door moves in jerks, the drive gear is probably stripped. You will often find fine plastic or metal shavings on the opener housing. The door itself may be fine.

A chain that sags and slaps against the rail is a separate problem and usually just needs tension. Do not keep running an opener that grinds, because the gear wear spreads to the motor.

One loud bang, then nothing moves

That is a torsion spring breaking. It sounds like a gunshot from inside the garage. The door is now at its full weight, often well over a hundred pounds, and the opener cannot lift it. Do not try to raise it by hand and do not use the opener.

We replace torsion springs for $180-$290 and we balance the door after, so it holds still at any height. Buckeye homes with two-car doors usually carry two springs, and we replace both when one goes.

Rattles you can fix in five minutes

A rattle with no squeal usually means a loose bolt. With the door closed and the opener unplugged, check the bolts on the hinges and the track brackets with a socket wrench and snug up any that turn freely. Do not overtighten, because stripped bolts cause bigger trouble.

Leave the bottom corner brackets and the spring hardware to a technician. Those parts carry the load of the whole door, and adjusting them is the most common way people get hurt. If the rattle continues after you tighten what you can reach, tell us where on the door you hear it.

Questions people ask us

Is a noisy garage door dangerous?

Squeaks and rattles are not. A loud bang followed by a door that will not lift is a broken spring, and you should stop using the door and call.

Can I lubricate it myself?

Yes, hinges, roller stems and springs. Use a product made for garage doors and keep it off the track face and off the rubber seals.

Why is the opener running but the door will not move?

Usually a broken spring or a disconnected trolley. Check that the red release cord has not been pulled before you call.

How much does a spring replacement cost?

$180-$290, quoted in writing before the work starts.
