Garage Door Repair in Maricopa, AZ: The Door Will Not Stay Open Halfway
A one-minute balance test that tells you if the springs are done.
A garage door that drops, or drifts up, when you leave it halfway open is out of balance. The springs carry the weight of the door, and when they weaken the opener ends up doing work it was never built for. A spring replacement is $180-$290 and it protects the opener.

The one-minute balance test
Close the door. Pull the red release cord so the door is no longer attached to the opener. Lift the door by hand to about waist height and let go slowly, keeping your hands clear.

A balanced door stays where you leave it. A door that falls is under-sprung. A door that rises on its own is over-tightened. Either way the springs need attention. If the door feels very heavy right from the floor, stop and do not lift it any further.
What the test result means
Springs lose strength over thousands of open and close cycles. The door still looks fine, but the opener is quietly carrying a load the springs should carry. You hear it as a slower, louder motor, and you pay for it later in a burnt-out opener.
If the door will not lift at all and you heard a bang, one spring has already broken. That is a repair we do the same visit when we have the part, and we replace springs as a pair.
Why we do not tighten a worn spring
Some people add turns to a tired spring to buy a few weeks. It makes the door feel lighter today and shortens the life of the spring that is left. A spring that has gone soft is near the end of its life, and the fair fix is a new one at the correct size for your door.
The right spring depends on the door weight. A single-panel steel door and a heavy insulated door do not use the same spring. The technician weighs the door and sizes the replacement, and then sets the balance.
How often to test the balance
Test the balance twice a year, when the clocks change is an easy reminder. Springs are rated by cycles, and a common standard rating is 10,000 open-and-close cycles. A door used four times a day reaches that count in about seven years.
Use is what counts, not age. A door that serves a busy household wears its springs out faster than one used once a day. If the test shows the door is drifting, book the replacement before the spring breaks, not after.

Questions people ask us
How do I know if my garage door is out of balance?
Disconnect the opener with the red cord and lift the door to waist height. If it falls or rises on its own when you let go, it is out of balance.
Can an unbalanced door damage the opener?
Yes. The opener ends up lifting the full weight of the door, which wears out the motor and gear much sooner.
How much is a spring replacement?
$180-$290, quoted in writing before work starts.
How long do garage door springs last?
They are rated by cycles, and the number of years depends on how often the door is used. A door used several times a day wears them out faster.
Is it safe to replace the spring myself?
We do not recommend it. A torsion spring holds a lot of stored force and slips cause injuries.
