Garage Door Repair in Mesa, AZ: When the Door Will Not Close
You press the button, the door comes down a few feet, then goes right back up. Or it will not move at all and you need to leave.
A door that closes and then reverses is almost always working as designed: the opener thinks something is in the way. Check the two small sensors near the floor first. If both lights are solid, wipe the lenses and try again. If a light is dark or blinking, that is your answer.

Why a door reverses on purpose
Every opener sold in the United States since the early 1990s has to reverse if the door meets resistance on the way down, and since 1993 it also has to stop if the sensor beam is blocked. So when your Mesa door comes down and bounces back, the opener is protecting a child, a pet, or a bumper. It is not broken. It is reporting something, and your job is to find out what.
That matters because the wrong fix makes the problem worse. Taping over a sensor or holding the wall button to force the door down defeats the safety system and still leaves the cause in place.
When you are stuck and need the car out
If the door is down and will not open, pull the red cord, lift it by hand, and prop it with a clamp or a sturdy bar in the track so it cannot drop. Do not do this if the door looks off the track or a cable is hanging loose. In that case leave it closed, and call. A door that is part way open and crooked can fall.

What the repair costs
The service call is $35 and it is credited to the repair. A sensor alignment or replacement is usually a short visit. An off-track door starts around $200. A spring pair, installed, is $180 to $290. If the opener head is the problem, a drive gear kit is $289 and a belt drive replacement is $689 installed. A new door starts at $1,800, and we will only suggest it when repair no longer makes sense for your door.
In Mesa we see a lot of homes where the opener has been replaced once and the springs and rollers never were. The door still closes, until the day it does not.
What a Mesa visit looks like
A person answers the phone at any hour. Technicians are dispatched Monday to Friday 7am to 8pm and Sunday 8am to 6pm. The technician looks at the door first, shows you what is wrong, and quotes before starting. A customer described it this way:
“Nate came out to our house and had our problem diagnosed within 3 minutes, he then took care of it and showed me what caused it and how to prevent it in the future.”

Garage door repair in Mesa: real questions, straight answers
Why does my garage door go down and then back up?
The opener is reversing for safety. A blocked or misaligned sensor is the most common cause, then an obstruction or friction in the track, then travel and force settings.
Both sensor lights are on and the door still reverses. What now?
Check the track for a bend or a jumped roller and try the lift test with the door closed and the red cord pulled. If the door is heavy or uneven, the cause is a spring, cable or track, and the opener is reacting to it.
Is it safe to hold the button to force the door closed?
We advise against it. That bypasses the safety reversal, and the cause of the problem is still there. Fix the sensor or the door instead.
Can I leave the door open overnight until you can come?
Yes if the door is open and stable, with a clamp or bar in the track. A crooked door or a door with a loose cable should be left alone and not moved.
How much does a garage door repair in Mesa cost?
The service call is $35 and is credited to the repair. Springs run $180 to $290 for the pair, an off-track repair starts around $200, and an opener gear kit is $289.
