The problem with judging spring work
A wrong spring passes its own test on day one
This is what makes spring work different from almost everything else you hire for. If a technician fits a spring that is too light for your door, the opener will still lift it. The door will still close. You will still write a five-star review that evening, because from where you are standing nothing is wrong.
What has actually happened is that the spring is carrying more than its rating every single cycle. It will burn through its cycle life several times faster than it should, and the first sign will be a bang eight or fourteen months later, long after everyone has moved on.
So reliable does not mean the door worked when he left. It means the spring was matched to the door, and there are two ways to know: what you watch him do, and what you check yourself later.
What you should watch him do before he quotes
Three of these take under a minute each and all three happen before any price is named:
- He measures the wire across twenty coils. Not by eye, with a tape or a gauge, then divides. Wire size is the number that decides the spring, and the difference between two adjacent sizes is invisible to the eye and significant to the door.
- He measures the inside diameter and the length. Residential doors are usually 1 3/4 or 2 inch inside diameter, and length varies.
- He weighs or estimates the door honestly. If your door has been replaced or insulated since the house was built, it is heavier than the original spec. A technician who quotes off the old spring without asking whether the door is original is about to repeat someone else's mistake.
If you are given a price before any of that happens, you have been quoted on a category, not on your door.
The three-minute test you can run in month six
Do this once, a few months after the work, on a cool morning. It costs nothing and it is the only honest audit of a spring job:
- Close the door and pull the red release cord to disconnect the opener.
- Lift the door by hand to about waist height and let go. A correctly balanced door stays roughly where you left it. It should not creep up and it should not sink.
- Raise it fully and let go again. It should hold open on its own.
- Lower it by hand. It should take light steady effort the whole way, with no point where it suddenly gets heavy or suddenly runs away from you.
If the door sinks from waist height, the spring is under-sprung for the door. If it climbs on its own, it is over-sprung. Either one means the sizing was wrong, and either one is worth a call while a warranty still exists.
What a spring warranty actually covers, and what voids it
Warranty language in this trade is loose, so get the specifics in writing on the invoice. These are the four lines that make a claim possible:
- The part fitted, with its size, so a later technician can tell whether the right spring went in.
- Parts term and labour term, separately. These are frequently different lengths and the labour one is the one people assume they have.
- The start date.
- What is excluded.
Two things genuinely void most spring warranties and both are reasonable: a later adjustment by someone else, and a change to the door weight after fitting. Adding insulation panels to a door after the spring was sized to it changes the physics of the job you paid for. Tell whoever sized the spring if you plan to do that.

Questions we actually get
What Peoria homeowners ask after a spring job
How do I know if my new garage door spring was the right size?
Run the balance test. Close the door, pull the red release cord, lift it to waist height by hand and let go. A correctly sized spring holds the door roughly still. If it sinks, the spring is too light for the door. If it rises on its own, it is too heavy. Do this a few months after the work rather than the same day, because a slightly wrong spring behaves well at first and then does not.
Why would a new spring break within a year?
Almost always because it is carrying more weight than it is rated for, which happens when the spring is matched to the old paperwork instead of the current door. Insulated and replacement doors are heavier than the originals they replaced. The second reason is cycle rating: a 10,000-cycle spring on a door that opens six or eight times a day is a four-year part at best, and less if it is also under-sprung.
Does a spring warranty cover labour as well as the part?
Sometimes, and the two terms are often different lengths, which is where most disputes start. Ask for the parts term and the labour term written separately on the invoice with a start date. Without that, a warranty claim becomes a conversation about what somebody remembers promising, and you will lose it.
Do you fit springs in Peoria the same day you come out?
Usually yes. We carry the common residential spring sizes on the van, so once the door is measured we can generally complete the work on the first visit. An unusual size, a single-to-double conversion or a door that turns out to need cables and drums as well can add time, and we will tell you that while we are standing there rather than afterwards.
Ask for the measurements before you accept a price
Call (480) 405-0909 with your door width and whether you see one spring or two. We will give you the range on the phone, measure on site, and write the size and the warranty on the invoice so you can check the job in six months.
