Garage Door Repair in Carefree, AZ: Heavy Custom and Carriage-Style Doors That Sag or Stick

Why a heavy door fails differently, and what to fix first.

A heavy wood or carriage-style door that sags or sticks is usually asking for properly sized springs and fresh hardware, not a new door. Weight is the problem: springs sized for a lighter door wear out fast, and a bowed panel can bind in the track.

Weight changes everything

A plain steel garage door might weigh 130 pounds. A solid wood or wood-composite carriage door can run well past 200, and one with heavy glass or iron hardware heavier still. The torsion springs have to be wound and sized for that exact weight.

A common pattern with heavy custom doors: the door was swapped for a heavier style but the original springs stayed. The door looks fine and the opener strains. The opener then takes the blame, and gets replaced for no reason.

How to tell if the springs are wrong for the door

Disconnect the opener with the red cord and lift the door halfway. A balanced door stays put. If it creeps down or shoots up, the balance is off. A door that is merely tired will drift slowly. A door that is clearly mismatched will crash down from the same height.

A finished door on an Arizona home: heavier doors need springs matched to their actual weight.

Springs also wear out in a pattern. A pair rated for about 10,000 cycles on a door that opens four times a day lasts around seven years. Heavier doors fatigue springs sooner if the wire is undersized.

Sticking and rubbing in the track

Wood moves. Even a well-finished wood door takes on and gives up moisture, and in the desert that can mean a panel that bows slightly in dry heat. A bowed panel rubs on the track, scrapes the weatherstrip, or hangs at one hinge.

Look at the joints between panels with the door closed. An even, thin line is good. A wide wedge at the top or bottom of a joint means a panel has moved or a hinge has loosened. Tightening hinge screws and fresh rollers fix most of it. A panel that has truly warped is a replacement panel, not a repair.

If you plan a refinish, do it on a cool morning and seal the bottom edge and the top edge, which are the faces that take on moisture first. Unsealed end grain is where wood doors start to swell, and a sealed door moves far less from season to season.

Rollers, hinges and cables on a heavy door

Nylon rollers with sealed bearings carry weight and run quietly. Cheap steel rollers without bearings grind. On a heavier door, we check the cable drums, the bottom brackets and the center hinges, because they take the extra load. Never loosen the bottom brackets yourself, as the cables hold full spring tension.

What it costs

A torsion spring pair is $180-$290 installed, depending on size and wire. The service call is $35. If the door needs a stronger spring, we size it by the actual door weight, not by a catalog guess. We work Monday to Friday 7:00-20:00 and Sunday 8:00-18:00, and have since 2012, licensed under ROC338265 with 5.0 stars from 49 Google reviews.

Questions people ask us

How heavy is a wood or carriage-style garage door?

Often 200 pounds or more, depending on the material and the glass and hardware. Springs must be sized for that weight, not for a lighter steel door.

Why is my heavy garage door slow or noisy?

Usually tired or undersized springs make the opener work against the weight. Rollers and hinges are the next suspects.

Can a warped wood panel be repaired?

Minor movement can be corrected with hinge adjustment. A truly warped panel generally has to be replaced.

Do I need a stronger opener for a heavy door?

Not if the springs are right. The springs carry the weight, and the opener only moves the door.

How long do garage door springs last on a heavy door?

A standard pair lasts roughly 7 to 10 years on an average household. A heavier door with undersized springs can wear them out sooner.
